Behaviour of Recently Launched Russia’s Military Satellites In Space Sparks Interest

Russian Roscosmos headquarters

In Early February, 2025, Russian military sent the trio satellites into space. The missions of these satellites were classified as has been with most Kosmos (or Cosmos) launches. These three satellites, designated as Kosmos 2581, 2582, and 2583 were launched from Soyuz-V2.1 rocket from Plesetsk Cosmodrone.

While the purpose of these satellites is unknown, their recent behaviour in the near polar orbit, just 364 Miles above earth has sparked interest among space trackers and analysts.

Reports indicate that these satellites has been performing proximity operations close to other objects in space according to Space Enthusiast Jonathan McDowell.  The US military, however, notes that the Russian satellites were performing attack and defend tactics, intended to improve the proficiency of their space force.

In the process, the Russian satellite, possibly Kosmos 2581 released an unknown object on March 18th. No official information with regards to this object has been made public by Russian military, as this mission was classified.

However, it is believed that the newly released object could be used to obtain certain mission goals, such as testing docking technologies, delivering scientific payload, or to do formation flying.

With these fascinating events taking place in space, it remains to be seen what Kosmos are up to in space.
